The U.S. empire has dispatched several warships including three guided missile destroyers to the southern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Allegedly, these worships are to be used to interdict the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. In reality, this is a direct threat of military intervention against the sovereignty of Venezuela.
There is a long history of US interference in the domestic affairs of Venezuela. On 11 April 2002 there was an attempted military coup to overthrow the government of Hugo Chavez. The U.S. has repeatedly instigated and supported violent mobilizations in Venezuela known as “guarimbas” in 2014, 2015, and 2017 in an effort to recapture control of the resource rich country. In 2019, the US recognized Juan Guaido, the self proclaimed interim president of Venezuela, as the leader of that nation after Nicolas Maduro won the election. The U.S. has repeatedly instigated and supported violent mobilizations in Venezuela known as guarimbas in 2014, 2015 and 2017 in an effort to recapture control of the resource rich country. Trump has repeatedly threatened to invade Venezuela.
The peoples of Venezuela have resolutely resisted every act of imperialist aggression.
Canada has been an active supporter of U.S. imperialist interventions against the Bolivarian Republic. In particular, Canada played a pivotal role in the formation of the so-called Lima Group which was used to meddle in the internal affairs of Venezuela.
The peoples of Venezuela have resolutely resisted every act of imperialist aggression against their homeland. They proudly defend their sovereignty and are mobilizing millions to resist this current attack!
Canada remains silent regarding the current threats made by the reactionary Trump administration.
The Canadian Peace Congress condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the imperialist threats against Venezuela and its peoples. Similarly, we denounce Canada’s silence regarding this transparent threat of aggression by U.S. imperialism.
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a sovereign state which will not bow to threats and intimidation from the empire.
